What’s a garden?

An area or plot used for the cultivation of various flowers, vegetables, herbs, or fruit. A public area for showing of botanical plants. The laying out and care of a plot of ground devoted partially or wholly to the growing of plants. It is used for the cultivation, display, and enjoyment of plants and other forms of nature.

Steps to start a garden

· Decide what you’d like to grow - If you won’t eat a crop, don’t grow it in your vegetable garden. Make sure your interest/choices show sense for your availaible area.

· Choose a location - Most fruits and vegetables need full sun, with a minimum of five hours of direct sunlight per day for fruiting. Partial shade is required for Greens, herbs and root veggies . Southern gardens - benefit by late afternoon shade, whereas northern gardens - direct sun .

· Plan Your Garden Beds - After deciding area of garden, decide on the type & size of garden bed(s). Raised beds are attractive and may make it easier to work in your garden, but they also dry out more quickly. In very dry areas, sunken beds are used.

· Grass Removal - Establishing a new garden bed, starts with removing weeds and grass.

· Garden Soil - Healthy soil is the foundation of a successful and thriving garden.

· Select the Right Plants - Herbaceous annuals: plants that go through their entire lifecycle in one growing season and must be re-planted every year, including marigolds, impatiens, petunias, zinnias, and cornflowers.

Herbaceous perennials (and biennials): plants that return every year, their foliage dies to the ground in the winter but the plant re-grows from its root system the following spring, like daylily, false indigo.

Woody trees and shrubs: plants that have woody stems and trunks, soft herbaceous stems of annuals and perennials.

Vegetables, fruits, and herbs: plants with edible seeds, fruit, stems, foliage, or roots.

· Choose the Right Seeds or Transplants

· Garden size – structure, assembling of potters , texture , line

Plant with care - Young plants are easier to damage than older plants, so they may need protection or hardening off when they are planted outside.

· Nurture your garden - A rule of thumb for watering is that plants need around one inch of water per week during the growing season. If rains fail, you'll need to water your garden.

· Enjoy your harvest
